Download: Rob Swift's Sketches of the Architect EP

Rob Swift is one hell of a turntablist. As part of the X-ecutioners he helped take the scratch medium way further than just a nimble fingered DJ moving a record back and forth in rhythmic succession. Along with the other members of the group he won the coveted DMC East Coast title in 1992 after having performed with them for just a year. He continued to create textured odysseys, working together uniquely to overlay and intertwine samples and scratched snatches into fully form songs until his departure in 2005. Anyone who has seen the seminal DJ documentary Scratch should be able to attest to the X-ecutuioners unique dynamic and Swift’s total immersion in the culture, even going so far as to help define a form of tablature to annotate a DJ’s scratches and flares. Since his departure from the group. Swift has released multiple solo albums, the latest of which, 2010’s ‘The Architect,’ saw him tackle the fusion of hip hop with classical music and ahead of his appearance in Room One on the 17th June for Jehst’s album launch we’re excited to be able to point you in the right direction of a free download of his follow up EP to that album. Entitled ‘Sketches of the Architect’ it finds Swfit revisiting uncompleted songs from the album sessions. Inspired by his fascination with classical music, its plain to see how it influenced his approach to his MPC and his turntables and it gives a great insight into Swift’s psyche, as he continues to push his art form to different levels of ingenuity.
