In Soliloquy: MATT TOLFREY

Ahead of his appearance in Room One for the first ever Cocoon here at fabric on the 27th November, we asked Leftroom boss and self confessed fabric regularm Matt Tolfrey, to run us through some of his most favourite moments and glowing memories of his time inside our brickwork. Well... Cocoon at fabric... who would ever of thought it!? I am honored to be a part of it for the first time at the club, and I can't wait to get Room One ready for the rest of the nights proceedings... I think my best advice for the night would be get there early, (not specifically to see me), but to make sure you get in at all! fabric has always been a magical place for me, from my first night clubbing there on their first birthday till the present day. I remember I had just started university in Nottingham and my old school mates and I travelled down only to find out Sasha was in hospital after a car crash, and Adam Freeland also wasn't going to make it. This wasn't going to spoil our fun though! Lee Burridge played a full breaks set in Room Two which was absolutely next level, and Craig and Terry tagged in Room One to close the party out. I remember Craig playing Bushwacka's - 'Herbal' on Plank Records and I nearly faded away on the dancefloor! The soundsystem sucked me up;  I had never heard bass like it! Fast forward to today and the club feels more like a home to me than a regular gig. I'm not meaning to be big headed in anyway, but I have played fabric many times now, so it is very hard to pin point a specific highlight as playing is always such a moment, for the purpose of this post I will try... I would say one of my hihlights is the very first time I played; which was warming up for Tyrant many many years ago. I believe it was either Sieg Uber Die Sonne or SCSI 9 who played live that night after me, and both Craig and Lee were on top form as ever. Other than that playing my debut live set in Room Two last year with Chris Sylvester AKA Inxec, when Leftroom last hosted the room, was something else; and probably just tips the first time I ever DJed there. It was also my birthday weekend, I was a nervous wreck, but it went really well. It was so nerve wracking though that we have never done it again!!! Maybe we'll just save it for fabric once a year?!?! Of course, last month my label Leftroom took over Room Three with debut appearances from LA based, Culprit trio Droog and Cadenza's Chilean man of the moment Felipe Venegas live! I was also celebrating my 30th birthday that exact night so I helped out by playing a few records at the end of the night. On my weekends off I am still a regular at the club, I normally leave the birthday weekend off my schedule so I can attend, but unfortunately I missed this year as I was in the USA on tour. Over the years I have been blown away by many DJs and live acts, to many to mention, but every year the club evolves and new and exciting acts come through the doors. I would like to say a special thanks to Craig Richards, who without hearing me play at the Bomb in Nottingham all those years, and supporting me since, I would not of been playing at fabric so early in my career. It may have happened later down the line, but to have been part of the club from so early on was amazing; it gave me much needed confidence at a young age when I was still finding my feet in the DJ booth, when all of this was still very new to me. Also a big thank you to Judy Griffiths, everyone knows this special lady, and weirdly she has become like my older sister who has seen me grow as a DJ and a person. Judy, you are the reason many of us keep coming back to the club, and your forward thinking keeps us all motivated! And last but not least, here's something to ponder: I was told a story once that Derrick Carter will only listen to DJs once they have turned 30, as he then truly believes that they have worked out exactly where they are at musically. If this is the case this year is going to be alot of fun!!! Matt x
