After eighteen hours straight of pure dancefloor indulgence and with our hair, garms and trainers looking as fresh as a Chilean Miner, there’s only one place to be this Sunday night at fabric…
Following an explosive summer on tour this year at Sonar, Burning Man, Glastonbury and Ibiza and with their residents all together again- Clive Henry, Toni D, Lee Foss, FB Julian, Derren's Disco and special guest Shaun Reeves - kubicle will be taking over Room Three from 6.30pm this Sunday, helping us celebrate 11 electric years of fabric.
For those uninitiated in the Kubicle party ethos, we don’t want to give too much away… but what we will say is don’t forget to grab your most adventurous hats, masks and wigs before entering their dazzling music hub of deviant disco beats and sultry after hours house and techno… A concept dreamt up by founders Liz Mendes and Sonia Anderson; they are the queens of Sunday night raving with a loyal following who were born to dance around the clock.
We caught up with Liz to hear more about Kubicle’s excessive plans for their proceedings this weekend…
Can you tell us about the concept behind the kubicle nights?
Our main concept is that we host fun intimate parties in special venues focusing on great music. That’s our foundation really and from that we make sure that the party always has our KUBICLE touch. We pride ourselves in paying close attention to detail from the dressing of the club to the themes. Our parties are all about the full experience. We want you to dance all night with old friends, get lost in the photo booth with new friends covered in sequins and glitter, full of stories for the next day or maybe not if its a good one you probably won’t even remember it... But you will wake up smiling.
We have a really loyal, colourful following who travel round the world with us and we take them to all kinds of spots from toilets to S&M dtudios, roof tops to strip clubs, boats to festivals......
What drove you to start the Kubicle parties?
We have always been about Sunday clubbing - it’s our thing even before we started Kubicle five years ago. Our main night out would be to Aka, Clandestino, or fabric... so Mondays were always a write off. We simply had had enough of having house parties every weekend and we wanted to create something special; something small for our friends and family. It needed to be just right and then we found public life and kubicle was born.
Describe Kubicle’s small family of residents? What is the relationship like between them both on and away from the decks?
We're a kubi family. I love our residents, it’s good to have such a mix of British, Italian, French, American- it’s what make us so diverse. We live in London which is such a multi cultural city and our party reflects this. We're all friends above and beyond kubicle and spend lots of time together on and off the dancefloor.
Tell us about your latest addition to the Kubicle bill - Lee Foss?
Lee is so talented and we're really behind him with everything he does. He fell into the kubicle residency with ease and it was natural for him to join us. I’m really glad he's part of our team.
How does it feel to be invited to join fabric on its 11th birthday celebration alongside the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Stacey Pullen and Damien Lazarus?
I’m really honored to be involved with such an iconic club. fabric has supported us for years and I’m just happy to be apart of it. Plus the birthday party is always, for me, your best party of the year so it’s great timing…
Have you got something special planned for the big occasion? Your themed parties have included Alice In Acidland and Glamrock Metallics for example…?
After being inspired at Burning Man we are going to go for a headpieces theme so expect lots of masks, wigs and the like. I love creating the theme. I’m thinking for Halloween at Metropolis I’m going to do Midsummer Night’s Scream.... :) Imagine all the donkeys and nymphs floating around on the poles…
What’s your focus for the evening session of our birthday?
We’re going to bring to fabric "a night with kubicle"... All our residents are playing together again: Clive Henry, Toni D, Lee Foss, FB Julian and Derren's Disco with special guest Shaun Reeves. Room 3 is a perfect size for us; we will start at 6.30pm with some disco from Derren and Craig then going into house and techno...
Saturday's party is carrying through to Monday morning. How do you think the crowd will cope with all these extra hours to play with?
Like they do every other weekend... Don’t underestimate them; they are true professionals when it comes to staying power and stamina. I’m sure they will all reach the Kubicle finishing line....
What’s your advice for keeping going..? The Kubicle collective must be well practiced after trips to Sonar, Burning Man, Glastonbury and Ibiza this year…
Don’t stop till you get enough.... :)
Best Kubicle story of the year so far?
Where do I start… so many to choose from… but I think Bar 25 was the most magical party we have done this year. I love that place, it’s so special and really inspiring we had so many friends that had come out with us and a lot of love. I’ll be so sad to see it finally go but I’m really proud to have been a part of it.
