Introducing... Madato & his fabric Promo Mix

As the youngest Italian exponent of Items & Things; the label and roster run by Magda, Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, Andrea D'Amato aka Madato (pictured above with Magda) is a promising talent, glimmering pertinently on our horizon. Through his infatuation with the dark techno rhythms of Troy Pierce and, in particular, a DJ set of his back in Ibiza in 2008, it wasn’t long before Madato was formulating his own unique sound, catching the attention of Magda who included his daring ‘The Night's Rumours’ track on her fantastic fabric 49 compilation. Since then Madato has played a leading role in the Items & Things uprising, releasing his debut album for them last year and touring with the trio, regularly hijacking underground party joints to make truly unforgettable experiences. We asked Madato to introduce himself to us before he performs his debut live set in Room One alongside Marco Carola on Saturday 13th October. He's also presented us with a rare promo mix of unreleased tracks and his particular mantra for the music has elicited a very special response from us in the office today, so we hope it does a little of the same for you… Download: Madato - fabric Promo Mix Hi Madato. Please can you introduce yourself for our readers? Yes, with pleasure. I’m a 23-year-old guy from Naples, Italy. I make music and perform live for Items & Things as Madato. Who and where do you go to for inspiration in your music making? Well, I usually look back to what other bands or friends have done or are doing but inspiration mostly comes from those unpredictable events which occur to me. That could be a book or just a film. I find my home city very inspiring as well and I've got my very own hideaways here and there where I like to go and think about creation. How did you feel when you heard the news Magda dropped your track ‘The Night’s Rumours’ in her fabric 49 compilation? I still remember the day when she wrote to me asking for that track. It was the end of August I suppose and I was enjoying myself on a bit of a vacation in Capri, which is 1 hour from Napoli. The email was labelled as ‘urgent’ because she needed the track for the mix. So I rushed back in the studio the same day, pretty excited and honoured about the news and worked a lot on it. Then when the compilation came out it was such a great feeling to find the CD out in stores. It was actually the very first time that my music was literally ‘on the market’ so fabric has a special meaning for me. How long did you know that you wanted to be a part of the Items And Things roster? What was it that drew you to their sound and ethos as a label? I actually didn't know it when I sent demos to Troy back in 2008. I didn't mean to become part of the label at the time. Besides, I&T was still a sub label of M-nus and being part of the whole thing was very difficult. I only wanted him to play out my music as I really loved what he and Magda were doing in both production and performance. When this happened I felt completely rewarded and satisfied. Afterward, they simply asked me to release an EP with them and it was like: ok let's do this! You’re performing live next Saturday for the first time in Room One. Can you give us a little of what to expect from your show and the set up and journey you plan to take us on? I think my live sets are not properly that mind-blowing where people go nuts but rather a collection of songs which get into a combination of sounds and melodies that people could find interesting, or maybe appealing to dance. What’s next for you on Items And Things? I made this remix for Click Box which came out end of September. I definitely dig it. I reckon it's a good compromise between (hopefully) good listening music and something for the dancefloor. As for long term plans? I'd like to release an album one day, when I feel ready. I'm also running a project with my label mate and dear friend in life Danny Benedettini. We have some unreleased tracks which I really love and always play in my live sets. Finally, can you tell us about the mix you've done for us? There's a bunch of unreleased tracks in there. Those ones I always want to play in clubs every time but, for some reason, I never do. Having a special chance like this to spread unreleased music is a great opportunity to take once in a while. Catch Madato in Room One on 13th October.
