Introducing Pinch's Bristol All Stars
This Friday in Room 3, Tectonic boss and all round dubstep loom-inary Pinch curates a rather special lineup. Whether or not you read or pay particular attention to the electronic music press, Bristol has long since been one of the pivotal cities for music. With a strong soundsystem culture and an incredibly diverse population, the BS postcode has given the world a plethora of historic acts and artists. Massive Attack and Portishead are two of the most collectively prominent acts, with their respective brooding, captured over numerous albums with each receiving glowing critical acclaim. The city also gave the world Roni Size and Reprazent, a crew that helped tip drum & bass into the mainstream after their ‘Newforms’ album scooped the Mercury Music Prize in 1997.
Fast forward to the present day and the dockside city is a catchment area for a wide range of devout producers. From fabric 55 producer Shackleton – who is now located in Berlin – to his Skull Disco cohort Appleblim, Pinch and beyond to labels like BUILD, Punch Drunk, Immerse, Idle Hands and Schmorgasbord, Bristol is proving itself to be lodged at the very bleeding edge of music. Right now the next generation of producers are again, flipping things in their favour, carving out a brand new niche and style that is uniquely their own; and as the next phase of music starts infiltrating dancefloors and record shops alike its reassuring to know that these new sounds are backed up with the kind of production pedigrees and forthcoming material any forward thinking record label would kill for.
Inspired by the open community and the closet geography of the smaller scene Pinch has always stood as something of a figurehead for the city’s dubstep focussed output. As a promoter he brought the big booming, chest rattling rigs to his Dubloaded lineups, providing the necessary bass weight in droves and as a label boss he’s birthed one of dubstep’s most respected imprints, Tectonic (not to mention his Multiverse umbrella company which is father to Joker’s Kapsize label as well as Pinch’s other label ‘Earwax and October’s Caravan). Famed for a heavy handed, dread infused production style he’s embellished his paramaters a little of late, slowing down to a house tempo for the Swamp81 released ‘Croydon House’ but even moreso for us, he’s always been a great and present barometer for budding talent.
So under the banner of ‘Bristol All Stars’ Pinch touches down in Farringdon this Friday with a trio of incredible producers in tow:
Guido, whose self styled sex odysseys were collated on last year’s ‘Anidea’ album for Punch Drunk, has a style inherent only to himself. It’s all R&B gloss, contorted basslines and the kind of melodic exploration you’d fully expect from a classically trained, jazz besotted pianist. Having gone a little quiet in the wake of his album release, he recently provided this mix for Oki Ni which features a few sneaks at his new material.
Gemmy is, alongside Guido and Joker, often referred to as a member of the ‘Purple Trinity’ – the trio of producers took their shared love of caterwauling synthesizers and primitive computer game soundtracks out of their bedrooms and into clubs with devastating effect. Gemmy’s break out release on Punch Drunk ‘Bk 2 The Future,’ injected dancefloors with a superior swagger, punching the floor hard whilst the simple melodic progressions whirled around in the headspace. Reportedly working on a batch of new material Gemmy uploaded a 25 min mix entitled ’25 Minutes of Wow’ for the Sureskank Collective’s blog.
The lineup is completed by Kahn, the third artist on the bill who has released an introductory 12” on Punch Drunk – a label so often the benchmark of great Bristol productions. His single for the label highlighted his productions knack of alighting a dance and their swirling techniques won fans across (and way beyond) the scene. With a slew of dubplates reportedly packed for his fabric debut Kahn, put together a mix for the Sonic Router blog last week, providing the most current glimpse of what you can expect from a quartet of Bristol’s best this Friday.
