Signing to Friction’s Shogun Audio label is a Trojan measure and something of an honour. The Prototypes, a duo of producers from Brighton, have rapidly come through the ranks with their track ‘Cascade’ making fans in all the right places with radio support from BBC Radio 1, enabling them to remix artists like Ian Carey & Snopp Dogg, DJ Vadim and The Qemists. With their arrivial in Room One for Playaz this Friday imminent, we shot Chris and Nick some quickfire questions to learn us a few things about the dup before they hit Farringdon and release their debut single for Shogun in August.
Hi guys, how are you? We've heard you're hopping around Europe this week before touching down in Room One on Friday. Where are you today?
We've had a mad few weeks, playing in Australia, Malta, London and today we are in Cologne in Germany, which is our first time here so we're excited. Tomorrow it’s on to Barcelona for innovation in the sun.
For those who may not be familiar with your music, let's talk about last year when things really kicked off with the release of 'Cascade'; how have the last 12 months been? How much have your lives changed?
The last 12 months have been nothing short of crazy, it’s been amazing. ‘Cascade’ did us proud and really helped seal our arrival, our lives have got a lot busier with gigs, studio time, interviews etc which is wicked because we are doing the things we always wanted to.
2010 also saw you sign to Shogun Audio, how did it happen? Can you tell us more?
We had already spoken to a load of labels but were incredibly impressed with what Friction and Ktee had to say and the plans they had for the label. For us it’s exciting to be at the forefront of a new chapter of the label.
Things have been moving really quickly for you, are you now concentrating solely on your music careers?
Even when we were working or at uni we were still just focused on music, anything else was a means to an end; we’ve given up our day jobs now and are working soley on Prototypes stuff.
The D&B scene in Brighton keeps going from strength to strength and you're definitely one of the key players in this current vibe. Is there something in the water we should know about?
We are lucky to come from a city that has such a vibrant music scene, and we were able to draw influences from that at an early age. The sheer amount of artists that come from down here is wicked, and we are proud to continue to represent that.
Seeing as this is the first time we get to have a chat, and we'd like to get to know you better, let's get down to the nitty gritty with some quickfire questions.... What's your earliest musical memory?
Nick : Listening to hardcore jungle blasting from my brother’s room when I was about 8 years old.
Chris : My brothers first drum kit when I was 3.
Which item of clothing can you not live without?
Nick: I love my caps… I feel bare and venerable without them… haha.
Chris: Adidas trainers for me.
What's your take away of choice?
Nick: Pompoko in Brighton - the best Japanese ever.
Chris: There’s no particular restaurant but I love Chinese crispy shredded beef.
What's your favourite 90s pop tune?
Nick: Snap – I’ve Got The Power, its uber cheese but it’s an all time classic.
Chris: Baby-D – Let Me Be Your Fantasy
Finally, even with such an immense touring schedule this Summer, will you also be spending time in the studio? What should we be keeping an ear out for?
We make sure we are in the studio everyday that we are not travelling; it’s what we love doing most. Our debut Shogun release 'Born to Rise' is dropping in August, along with some other top secret tracks, and our remix for Snoop Dogg and Ian Carey will be out in the summer.
