Back in December we were faced with one of the bleakest winters to date. The torrential snow and bitter cold climaxed in the cancellation of one of our most anticipated live shows. The news was hard to swallow and after hearing the rave reviews of Paul Kalkbrenner’s twelve-city European tour last year – a tour which sold over 50,000 tickets in three days, marking a milestone within the realm of live electronic performance and garnering an overwhelming response from old and new techno heads.
On Thursday 28th April we’re opening up Room One exclusively to honour our love of his music and bring you that infamous live show, one attended by over 100,000 fans. Performing live and recording for over a decade, Kalkbrenner has developed his own take on the minimal sound; marrying techno’s pounding rhythm with evolving organic synths and a rich tapestry of melody and it’s through using Ableton Live’s plentiful features that he translates his studio work into his sonic journey of a live set.
As one of the first acts to be signed to Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label in 1999, Kalkbrenner has achieved substantial goals with remarkable swiftness and stands positioned among techno music’s most forward thinking artists. Standing out amongst his contemporaries, the Berlin-based producer has received critical acclaim for his acting role in the prestigious German independent movie ‘Berlin Calling’ which tells the story of the highs and lows of a techno DJ in Berlin. Restlessly inventive, he also produced the film's soundtrack which included some of his biggest tracks to date, including ‘Sky and Sand’ which features vocals by his brother Fritz.
So, after a long enforced impatient wait, we can finally unite in sunnier territories to enjoy this remarkable talent. Kalbrenner will be joined by Germany’s most prominent techno ornithologist, Dominik Eulberg and Sonat Records budding Romanian born Toronto native, Simina; two artists who more than compliment his style and approach.
