FABRICLIVE 54: David Rodigan is available to buy today! Expect the unexpected; this mix is a far cry from the obvious tracks you expect to hear on a reggae compilation. Mr. Ram Jam has been fastidious in his selections for this iconic mix so we asked him to give us an insight into the creative process behind the CD and his deep-seated love for our club...
“Everyone knows that it is rather difficult to mix reggae, because of its pace and tempo; it just doesn’t mix the way that house mixes, but I assembled the songs in the order that I thought fitted best in terms of the structure of the music, and then we went to the studio and put them together that way with some jingles. We thought about doing a live mix, but decided that it would be more accessible without me doing my whoops, hollers and pull-ups.”
“fabric has been a whole new experience for me and it’s been absolutely fascinating. A few years ago, Jazzy B did a night at fabric and I played a short set, but one of the main events I was involved with was with Caspa—he’s an amazing dubstep producer, and he wanted me to be on his album, because I started getting sampled on dubstep records, which I didn’t even know was happening until my sons told me. And when Caspa had a launch for the album, I was invited to play, and it was an amazing experience, because I saw the vitality and energy of young people—much younger than a traditional reggae audience—with all this energy and passion, and it just reminded me of being sixteen again, when I first heard dub music; I was able to play my vintage Tubby dubs, and they just went crazy, because it’s the same root, the same origin, the same source…the love that came back onto the stage was really something to behold.”
