We always like to add a little spin to our features wherever possible so whilst it’s always great interviewing our favourite artists, sometimes it’s more interesting to pass the torch to the artists themselves. Juggling numerous roles, the NTS / Radio 1 and revered DJ, Moxie, has hammered out a pivotal following and a host of critical acclaim across London and beyond for her on-point selections, slick dance-floor sets and boundless musical knowledge. So before she jets to FABRICLIVE this weekend, we asked her if she could select a fellow artist from the bill to interview. Here's what she had to say...
If someone were to ask me who my favourite producers right now I would say hands down SCNTST is definitely in my top three. He's been around for a few years now but is finally starting to get the recognition he deserves.
After making contact with label boss Alex from Boys Noize via Twitter a few years back they have already put out a healthy volume of music not to mention his first album titled 'Self Therapy' which came out at the end of last year.
At only 20 years old his sound is way above his years ranging from not only Techno to House but also Hip-Hop. The first time I saw him play out was at Fabric & I can't wait to spin alongside him tonight. We had a chat about his past and what he's feeling at the moment.
Tell us about your first introduction to music production?
When I was 10 years old I played in my dad’s band for about two years, this helped me in terms of showing me how to arrange tracks but, I first discovered how to produce music through a music lesson at school, my teacher took me to a computer room and we could play on this music programme called ‘Magix’ which I had never heard of before…
What sort of beats were you making?
I don't really remember it anymore but I think we recorded some vocals with a mic and put them over some loops from Magix.
You're into a lot of different musical genres ranging from Footwork, Indie to Techno and Hip-Hop. When did you love for music and dance music first begin?
I think I first started to love music when my dad would show me more and more of it and when I realised that you can do music by yourself. My first introduction to dance music was when I was around 15 years old, when I used to skate a lot, a friend invited me and my friends to this big fabric hall where we could skate. There were also some DJ’s playing cool house music on a pair of turntables.
It sounds like your dad has played a pretty major role in your introduction to music, does he ever come out to your gigs?
Yeah, he already did that a couple times and even liked it... I'm very thankful for him because he wanted me to listen to / make music from the beginning.
I read in your bio that you played a lead role in a Musical, have been dying to know what the role was and were you singing at all?
I don't exactly know anymore what role i was playing, but it had something to do with rock music and a church... I played one of the main characters so I had to sing, it was a pretty funny experience.
I've seen you've been playing at some pretty major festivals recently. What's would you say has been your most memorable set so far?
I couldn't answer the question because all the festivals I’ve been to were different but mostly good experiences but I would say, for example; Dour Festival or I Love Techno was sick.
When you play in different countries do you switch up what you play or do you already have an idea of where you want to take it?
I never have an idea what I’ll play until a couple minutes before the set.
You recently put out your album with Boys Noize which was heavily techno based but there were a couple Hip-Hop tracks on there. Is this something you would want to work on more for your future releases?
Ah I just see what comes out, I don’t really focus on any genre. I just want to make anything that comes to mind.
We are playing in Room One together tonight - Which I can't wait for! What would be your perfect way to spend a day in London?
I always wanted to go record shopping as I’ve never done that in London before – that would be dope!
And finally what are your top 3 tracks to play out at the moment?
1. Tijn - Tool 6
2. Somewhen - SRX
3. Oneohtrix Point Never - Zebra
