To end a series of three consecutive WetYourSelf! themed features on our blog which started with their mix from local talent Antony Difrancesco and interview with international multi-intrumentalist Dinky, today we turn our attention towards RM2 hosts this Bank Holiday Sunday Tief and present an interview conducted by party host Hessletime with his special guest Axel Bowman. Plus, wanting to show off Hessletime's own prowess as a selector the WetYourSelf! crew keenly commissioned him from a promo mix to guide you through the Tief styled sonics set to flow from the Martin Audio rig on this final Bank Holiday session of the year.
You were brought up and still reside in Stockholm.. Can you tell us about the music, club and party scene there and how it compares, in your mind, to that of cities such as London and Berlin?
Stockholm has a kind of short history of clubbing compared to London and Berlin. We're still very much developing our own style here and the progress looks really good. There has always been good music around, good record stores and DJ's, but now we also have a few clubs that are booking international acts on a regular basis. Most places here close at 3 or 5am and dancefloors are usually not full until after midninght so most times the DJs just have a short time to play all their favourite records, maybe that makes for a bit more intense sets here? Oh, yeah, there's also a lot of undergroud/illegal parties also for the late night/early morning madness!
How do you feel the city has shaped you as an artist and a person?
I don't know. I used to think that growing up when Adam Beyer and Jesper Dahlbäck were starting out would have coloured me somehow.. but my music and DJing has taken a completely different path from theirs i think..
Can you give me 3 things that make you proud to be Swedish?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Börft Records & hot women
You play out on your own aswell as part of the DJ threesome 'Studiobarnhaus'. If you could play a 'back to back' set with anyone in the world, anywhere in the world, who would you pick and where would it be?
My Perfect scenario would be me and Vangelis on top of Italian volcano Etna (while it erupted!) blasting emo-synth classics in the sunset.
You also run the label with and share your studio with Petter and Kornel, do you feel that working so closely with your fellow Swedes has helped you with your own music and maybe kept you motivated in any way?
Of course! They are super involved in everything I do, as am I with their stuff. I'm really blessed to have them around me. I don't like being alone.
You never make or play boring or generic music, all your tracks have something a little different about them and you seem to be attracted to weird and wonderful sounds. What is the strangest sample you have ever used, or the strangest instrument you have recorded in any of your tracks?
Thank you! Well, once I made a tune using nothing but sounds I could get from a 100 dollar bill. very Matthew Herbert, I know, but the result was actually really nice.
I think everyone is very much looking forward to hearing you long awaited album, can you tell us a little about it?
I'm waiting to get the masters back from Lopazz, very excited about that. it has taken some time to get it out of me, but now all the stressful stuff is behind me, only fun stuff ahead.
Are most of the tracks made for the dance floor or to listen to at home? And are there any surprises in there?
There are a few strange nuggets in there, some that might be interesting to listen to when you drive home late at night alone in the dark. but there are also a few tracks that Marco Carola could play, haha.
Most Djs have 'get out of jail free' tracks that they know will always work well and can dig them out of a hole, what are your top 3 'GOOJF' tracks?
- anything from Swedish labels Junk Yard Connections and Karlovak
- Syclops - Where's Jason's K?
- The Mole - Nervous Disid
And say perhaps a gig is going particularly well and you feel the crowd will be receptive enough and open to anything you play, are there any particularly 'out there' tracks that you might feel daring enough to play?
- Actress - Crushed
- any track by Funkineven
- Alex Cortex - Emergence
While we are there, what are your favourite 5 tracks so far of 2013 to play out?
Lord, I have no idea... I hate lists!! but in no particular order, here are some tracks I'm feeling right now:
- the cyclist - daisy spirals
- emmanuel - eternal love
- dungeon acid - move
- lukas nystrand von unge - förmodligen
- marvin horsch - pace
I was at the Garden festival with you recently and remember you being in some sort of altercation with a member of the security staff while on one of their boat parties, were you in some sort of trouble, or just having a big hug?
Haha, right, yeah I was really drunk, there was and endless queue to the ONE toilet there, so I took an empty cup, found a not-so-busy corner and tried to go. I never did though before some huge Croatian dinosaur hunter came and nearly threw me off the boat.
Finally, I am really looking forward to playing in South Africa with you next year. Having never been to the country before, what are your expectations of the country, its parties and its people?
Well, on one part I will arrive there being European white middle class, the guilt of that will be more present than ever I guess. But on the other hand I might go there and bring some escapist joy, good vibes and even inspiration? that has to be a good thing on many levels. i imagine south Africa being overwhelmingly inspirational and strange. other than that i still have the sounds of the world cup in my mind, haha. im so excited.
