Artist Profile: Lukid

Luke Blair’s music has steadily found its following amongst the ever expanding group of today’s hip hop enthusiasts who are embracing the wobble and pomp of modern day hip hop instrumentals made public by people like Flying Lotus and his MPC armed cohorts like Samiyam, TAKE and Sir Hudson of Mohawke. When I first really ‘heard’ him it was a true moment of epiphany; a late night car journey as a passenger, drifting off into thought as the cascades of swells and stuttering drum patterns peppered my ears with the soothing sentiment Blair’s music oozes out of every note. Under the Lukid moniker Blair’s two artist albums to date, ‘On and On’ and ‘Foma’ (both released on Actress’ revered Werk Discs imprint), are overtly stylistic, leaning back into their slower hip hop tempo and heavy sample based melodics with the knowing cross armed, cock necked slump of a stoned and contented 6 foot plus rude boy. “Lukid was pre-all this beats stuff really” muses label boss Actress in a recent interview with FACT Magazine, “when things really got concentrated on this beats scene, he was pre-all that.” Having released his debut record before the whole LA inspired beats renaissance that’s occurred over the last 2 years - with producers like Nosaj Thing, Ras G, Mono/poly and Manchester’s own Illum Sphere releasing singles and albums to heavy critical acclaim – Blair seems to have allowed his closed circuit of samples and micro patterns to mature since 2007, progressing and aging like a fine wine, adding real depth to his recent productions. His latest work, ‘Foma,’ (read the Resident Advisor review here) still manages to feel like a glorious secret to those who’ve fully digested its reams of atmosphere and clever production, which is perhaps due to its sense of intimacy and the caverns of sound Blair provides for the listener to seep into; or it could be down to him having not experienced the wider media coverage to mirror the accolades he’s received from his contemporaries and listeners. After catching the deep furrows and chilling drum thumps of his live set in the sunny surroundings of a mid-June Barcelona we’re extremely excited to welcome Lukid to the intimate confines of our freshly weathered Room 3, as part of our first ever Club Autonomic takeover alongside D-Bridge, Instra:mental, Actress and DJ Flight. Bringing a few more uptempo vibes and a stack full of interesting records this Friday is set to be a real eye opener for anyone who likes being schooled on the finer points of impact and intricacy if Blair's instalment in FACT Magazine’s mix series was anything to go by.
