Back 2 Back: 2020 Soundsystem

The power of the back to back set makes a habit of keeping fans guessing. In a devastating show of musical delights and notorious deck skills, it can abound energy in the most unpredictable way. So when the live electronic funk experience that is the 2020Soundsystem offered to give us a b2b interview between homegrown talents 2020 label boss Ralph Lawson and Argentian multi-instrumentalist Fernando Pulichino, we just couldn’t resist. Garnering great anticipation on the back of their live show – a taster of which was recorded live at Village Underground this summer - as well as laying down this lively, fun and creative slice of journalism made especially for fabricblog devotees off their own back, there’s no hiding from the inimitable live force of 2020Soundsystem this Saturday. Ralph: So what has been your best ever experience of a 2020Soundsystem live show? Fernando: The night we played for first time in NYC, we were ending our first tour there. Magic time… Ralph: You live in Argentina, how do you manage to keep the band going living 6,000 miles away? Fernando: We really concentrate on doing seasons with the band. I still come to Europe a couple of months every year and we do quite a bit of the writing separately. Fernando: What was the most influential live act you seen in the last year? Ralph: Caribou. I caught them at Sonar and Leeds. What a great band live! Ralph: You write a lot of material for the Soundsystem albums, what have been your favorite moments from the albums 'No Order' and 'Falling' ? Fernando: From No Order: 'Gray Clouds,’ 'No Order,' 'Can't stop the crew,' 'Hit the Fan'. From Falling: 'Ocean,' 'Closure,' 'Everytime,' 'Sliding away' Fernando: You played quite a few gigs trough out the last summer. What was your favorite show? Ralph : I really loved The Big Chill and going to The Garden Festival in Croatia with the Soundystem. Fernando: Are there any festivals that we haven’t played yet that you’d really like to? Ralph: I really want to play at Benicassim in Spain and Burning Man and Coachella in America… Ralph: We have toured in the states a lot over the last few years, how does it compare to European touring ? Fernando: Is a different circuit there, more of a concert thing. Early gigs throughout the week, certainly not so many club gigs, like the ones we do in Europe. Fernando: You are naturally a DJ. If you had to pick an instrument to learn what that would be? Ralph I also played drums as a kid; actually I’d love a drum kit again! I am looking at starting by buying some electronic drum pads. Fernando : You have been a DJ for many years. How does that compare with a 2020SS live show experience? Ralph: Good question, wow... loads less stress, more money, nice hotels and champagne dinners; but apart from that The Soundsystem wins hands down ;) Ralph: What are your plans for 2011? Fernando: Touring with the Soundsystem in Europe and South America, and hopefully the states too… really looking forward to 2011 as this year was amazing. Also I will be producing and remixing as 'Silver City' as well as 'Fernando' - I'm also finishing an album which is more of an indie-dance/whatever thing, so I'll try to get that out if poss! Oh and I might get a dog too...
