Catching up with... Lee Rands and his mUmU X fabric Promo Mix

mUmU logo We can’t help but be a little over excited for the return of Liverpool’s mUmU to fabric next Saturday. Following the frenzy of their Room Three takeover back in April, long-serving resident Lee Rands is back, this time bringing with him number one dc10 hero and fellow mUmU resident Clive Henry, plus Italy's hot property Tale Of Us. In a party saturated market, mUmU reinstates the quality of an intimate rave, staying balanced & energized with so many promoters surrounding them; four years on, they’ve stuck to their guns and are reaping the success. Following a whirlwind summer, hosting weekly beach parties in Ibiza, we pinned down mUmU's Lee Rands to find out what it really takes to be a resident these days, his memorable mUmU moments so far and he’s even delivered us a promo mix, so good it promises to lead you on a journey through the deeper shades of house and techno. DOWNLOAD: Lee Rands mUmU X fabric Promo Mix How’s the summer been treating you? What have been the highlights so far? The summer has been good thank you, a bit different as I have stayed in London this year (for once) working in the studio and playing some cool parties and festivals here in the UK. I think the highlights for me so far would have to be a terrace party I played at a few weeks ago mUmU hooked up with a party called spilt milk in London the sun was out and people were dancing it was an amazing day! Also I went to the secret garden party festival a few months ago that was special and as for the beach parties last year we had a good run of cool parties on the beach even though there was a lot to compete with. Tell us how you came to be a resident for Liverpools mUmU alongside Clive Henry who will also be joining you in Room Three next Saturday? I met Trevor and the mUmU gang in 2007s season in Ibiza and got on really well with everyone and they took a liking to my sound. Trevor told me about this party mUmU which he was going to start when we got back to the UK and asked me to play. I really liked the concept of the party and got back and played the 1st party when Trevor asked me to be one of the residents and nearly 4 years later I’m still here. Clive's music and personality perfectly suited what mUmU is about so in my mind he was a great choice of resident. Clive’s also the long serving resident to DC10’s Circo Loco, what have you learnt from one of the most legendary residents on the house/techno circuit? I've learned quite a lot from Clive musically I’ve always looked up to him since I first started. But most importantly he's taught me about attitude and just to be yourself and do your thing no matter who's there. What advice would you give to those starting out a residency? The advice I would give is to just keep digging deep for music old and new and to collect a wider range of tunes as being a resident you never know when you will be warming up or playing later in the night. What is mUmU's music policy and mission statement? mUmU's music policy is Live, electronic, house and techno and our mission statement is thank you for dancing!! What was it like growing up in East London & how have you seen the underground house scene change since the early 90’s. Any parties you wish were still going? Growing up in East London was cool. I got to hear a wide range of music from house, jungle, and indie music all of which I was in to at that time. And there was always something happening just round the corner or up the road so I didn't have very far to travel to or from a party which was a bonus. I didn't actually start raving till the late 90's and we used to go to some of the illegal underground warehouse parties which were very different from the frequent ones of today - the cross, key and canvas were regular haunts of ours too. Two of the parties that I wished were still going now would have to be DDD and halo. In a party saturated market, mUmU reinstates the quality of an intimate party… tell us why this is important? There are so many promotions around at the moment it’s hard to differ from the rest but we have just stuck to our guns and what we enjoy most which is the more smaller intimate parties and think it works well. Describe the first ever mumu party you played at, where was it, who was there and what went down? The first ever mUmU party was near on 4 years ago now it was at a very cool place called 3345 a private members club hidden in the heart of Liverpool. Everyone up and down the UK that we had met in Ibiza over the season were there and it was the perfect Ibiza reunion in my eyes. In your mind what makes for the perfect venue for a mUmU party? I would say that the perfect venue for a mUmU party would have to be around about the 200-250 capacity with loads of character, low ceilings, moody lighting and of course a crisp sound system. mUmU has been putting on parties for 4 years, what have been some of the most memorable to date? It’s actually been near on 4 years now there have been a bunch of memorable moments but I would have to say seeing mUmU host a room in Space Ibiza and fabric have to be the top 2 for me but as far as parties go I would say either the Moon Harbour showcase last year or the Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock one which were both super special. You've put together a tasty promo mix for us, what was your thought process behind your selection? The tracks I’ve put together are a mixture of old and new tunes that I think show where my sound is at the moment it starts deep and progresses a little but not too much as I do prefer the deeper shades of house and techno! Finally, do you have any productions in the pipeline? I've been working hard in the studio this year as I want to get my sound just right. I would rather put out quality over quantity so will keep on plugging away and hopefully have a few nice bits ready for early next year.
