First Things First: SASCHA FUNKE

We always remember our firsts - first day at school, first love, first heartbreak, first hangover...there's something about the first time that nothing else will ever match up to (with the exception of hangovers, which seem to only get progressively worse). As his blinding set in Room Two last month surely made a lasting first impression on anyone new to the sounds of Sascha Funke - we decided to ask him for a small run through of some of his firsts... How old were you when you first started djing? Fifteen years old. Who/what was your first love? Music. When did you first realise that music was your calling? When I saw a DJ playing in Berlin in '92. It was my first "summer of love" ;) What did your first tracks sound like? Minimal, dump and deep. Can you tell us a little about your first UK club experience? It was at The Key for Foreign Mug, an amazing party...and I remember that I forgot my CDs in Berlin. I was soo sad but at the end the vinyl was rocking the floor. How did you first hook up with BPitch Control? I met Ellen at her Bpitchcontrol parties in Berlin around '97/'98 and she told me about the label idea.  Me and Paul Kalkbrenner were meeting her often listening to music drinking tea together. We were starting to become friends, and in 2000 she signed us. It was a great time! Tell us a bit about your first LP, 'Bravo'...and how did that compare to your second, 'Mango'? Well, 'Mango' was more a concept then 'Bravo.' With 'Bravo,' I was just collecting tracks for five years.  I recorded 'Mango' in Aix en Provence. It was, for me, a completely new situation living in the countryside. I was working deeper and more concentrated.  I´ll do it for my next album again, definitely. And after all the first’s, we must ask - what's next for Sascha Funke? I did a couple of remixes that will be released during the year.  For the 10 years Bpitch compilation, I'm working on a new track right now.
