Audio: Billy Kenny drops a mix displaying his party spirit

DJ, producer, sound engineer, label owner: Billy Kenny’s become known for many things throughout his career, and he’s built a sizeable following from this in a shorter timespan than most artists dream of. He’s been releasing and playing party-inclined house since 2013, mostly through his label, This Ain’t Bristol. Kenny launched the imprint alongside three friends in Hanover in 2014, and the music they release fits snugly with his DJ style: the records always sound like they’re made specifically for the dancefloor, and he matches this behind the decks with quick transitions, scratching, sampling, and just about anything that will make the crowd take notice. He brings This Ain’t Bristol to Room Two on 15th June, and he displayed this ardent party spirit in an hour-long mix for us ahead of the date. Just a collection of tracks I love at the moment, which have been received really well on the road. Where do you typically find most of the music you play? Through demos, promos, and a small selection of mixes from the people I really look up to. I also find things on tour and from friends; so many places! Do you remember how you first got into electronic music? My uncle is an amazing producer, songwriter, and so much more! My Aunt has had a very successful career, both as a solo artists and with other well-established artists. I guess I was born into studios, playing around with equipment when people weren’t looking, whenever bands had breaks in a studio he worked in. I just loved picking new instruments or “toys” and seeing what I could do with them. My mum would show me people like Röyksopp, Massive Attack, and The Prodigy. I had a small understanding of what these amazing artists were doing to actually make music because I’d spent time in a studio looking at and hearing the instruments being used. Can you tell us about how This Ain’t Bristol started? This Ain’t Bristol is run between me and three other friends based in Hannover. We met in late 2013, and I moved there 3 months later. This helped the transition from what was an event into a record label. Do you have any big plans for the rest of the summer you can tell us about? Sure, This Ain’t Bristol have this awesome takeover with our record label in Room Two at fabric on 15th June! We’re also doing another club takeover in Germany the following day, and we’re hosting stages at Electric Forest and Fusion festivals later on this month. Amongst the club shows, I’ll be making my debut on the Resistance stage at Ultra Korea next week. Other dates include Elrow in Paraguay, and a few festivals in Canada including Osheaga and Electric Island. Really excited for those!
