Balancing the Chaos: Donato Dozzy On His Collaboration With Morphosis

At the beginning of the summer there so happened a meeting of minds that was sure to make a direct play for the deepest imagination of the purest techno heads: Dozzy/Beaini, a collaborative project between Donato Dozzy and Morphosis. It all began with a project that existed very much outside the club with the duo’s sound installation at this year’s Venice Biennial, made in homage to the renowned Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. With Dozzy and Beaini both feeling that their unison had the promise of creating something quite special, they have since have taken this collaboration out into the world of DJing, uniting for some exclusive back to back sets. We're set to host this exciting prospect this Saturday in Room Two so to explain a bit more about what we can expect and the behind the scenes works of Dozzy/Beaini the former creative answered a few questions for us… The first collaboration was earlier in the year, and was a sound installation – can you tell me a bit more about that piece? It was an exciting challenge. We were asked to complement a vision from the 50's, made by the Master Architect Carlo Scarpa. According to the original project, the sound had a very important role in the Olivetti shop, even if hidden. We just needed to amplify it a bit: a fountain in the entrance provided us the most crispy sounds to sample and re-manipulate later while working with pitch to voltage techniques. We used some EMS equipment for this. The same goes for the upper floor where most of the old type writers were placed one after the other in all their beauty. Their sound was fun to deal with and reminiscent of the fast and furious typing many people were used to back in the days; this can now be re-interpretated with a sort of urban jungle noise feel, we ended up "writing" down tons of drum patterns and using those ones. Finally all the sounds we put together were equally and separately distributed in the space using 8 different Funktion One Speakers. How has Rabih (Morphosis)’s work influenced you, how did you come to want to work together and collaborate more closely? First of all because of the mutual appreciation we share, secondly because of a very solid friendship that is always getting closer and closer. Finally, the curiosity of putting together 2 different approaches of music and seeing what the result is. In my case, I must say I am very fascinated by Rabih's totally extreme/unique and cosmic attitude. He brought back ancient vibes to the music scene today, he reminded us the importance of the "first take which is usually the best". He reminded us how important that improvisation is plus constantly breakin' the schemes. Music has ENDLESS faces, each of them can be linked to other ones even if apparently that's not an obvious fit. Unbalanced chaos and sense of taste, that is so interesting to me and I'll never get rid of him. And this Saturday when you will be performing here together it’s more of a DJ set – how does that link into your collaboration? Are you prepping any differently than you would for a solo gig? Of course, I’m into a different type of role when I'm with him. We do music in any way possible, the whole concept of a DJ set changes according to that: records can be tools no more or less than a drum machine can be, and the rest is totally unpredictable (I don't expect anything less from him), it's all about finding a way to balance the chaos: we’ve done a few back to backs these last few months and none of them sounded even little close to the previous one.. Have you both been working together in the studio, have you planned to put out any releases together? It’s yet to come!
