High Fidelity: Anthony Rother's Obscure Compilation

Anthony Rother has a huge range of music under his production belt, from the science fiction story telling electro of his debut Sex With the Machines (which he's set to re-release in the near future) to the more pensive machine built output for ambient experimentalist label Fax - it's all indicative of a wide ranging palette of influences that the guy making this music must hold. So ahead of Rother's return to Room Two we asked him to pick out five tracks that musically inspire him and in some way go to influence his current sound and this is what he came up with. Anthony Rother's "Obscure Compilation" Logic Systems - XY I’m starting with XY by Logic Systems. Logic Systems are quite unknown, but I like the purist sound of Logic System a lot, it's simply timeless. A long time ago I made an elektro mix which included this track for Viva2 VJ Mix. Sammy Dee & Heiko Laux - Moonside Playground Next is one of my all-time favorites - Moonside Playground by Sammy Dee & Heiko Laux. Back in 1996 I was in the studio at Kanzleramt in Bad Nauheim. Heiko was jamming live so I was there when this track was coming into being. The special thing for me is that at this time there was no automation in the production. Heiko was playing the whole arrangement and the effects of the jam live and recorded that. So this track has been created. The day after I got the request for this interview with you came I was on the Kanzleramt website and saw that Heiko is working on a Re-edit of Moonside Playground. At the moment I am in close contact with Heiko Laux - we're working on a Re-Release of my album " Sex with the Machines ." Jeff Mills - Basic Human Design Again, Heiko plays a role in this's track selection, it's because of him I got a mix tape some years ago. There was a track included on it from one of Jeff Mills Waveform Transmisson albums. In the track, there's an arrangement of strings which I really, really liked. At first I thought that it would be arranged complete with strings but now, according to the research for this obscure compilation, I found out that the strings can only be heard at the end of the piece. Jeff has released some great experimental music, which I want to discover for the future. John Carpenter - Christine I 'm a big fan of John Carpenter, both of his films as of his film music compositions. John has been strongly influenced and inspired me. The choice I faced for this compilation was between Escape from New York " or Christine. I have choosen “Christine”, because "Christine" suits better to this “obscure compilation”. This number represents the sound of the 80s for me. Inception, The Soundtrack - Time Hans Zimmer has lived in America for quite a few years now, but he actually comes from Frankfurt. His roots are in Frankfurt, like mine are. With this track he has become a legend for me, a simple timeless and uncompromising good arrangement. Awesome. You can also watch my latest video here:
