High Fidelity: Peter Van Hoesen's 'Time to Express' Playlist

Last month Peter Van Hoesen surprised the music world with the news of his new album, holding off announcing the project until the actual release date. By choosing only select interviews and audio content he took full control of how his album would be presented, eliminating the threat of Zipshare styled leaks or ‘pre-releases’. Perceiver comes two years after his debut long player Entropic City, and doesn’t hold back when it comes to going deep on his artistry. When it comes to sound exploration, as he says himself: "many of the tracks have been made with the idea of trying to uncover sounds and melodies that were potentially there. Sometimes it does not feel as if I am creating new music, but methodically uncovering something which already exists but has not yet been found." A liberty perhaps enjoyed without limit through him self-releasing on his self-run Time to Express label. Reaching back four years now, there’s quite a body of work outside of these albums on the label to explore from solo EPs from the owner which feature remixes from peers and solo works from those he admires, whether that’s Donato Dozzy or Convextion. So, ahead of his Farringdon shaped celebration of the new release this Saturday in Room Two, the Belgian producer has looked back over this impressive body of productions and given us his own personal run through of highlights from the Time to Express back catalogue. Peter Van Hoesen: Trusted - Norman Nodge Reconstruction (T2X01) This is from the first release on the label, it was also the first remix I ever requested. Norman did a wonderful job, after four years this track is still one of my favourite remixes on Time To Express. Donato Dozzy & Cio D'Or: Menta (T2X07) There are many memories linked to this release, musically as well as personally. I first heard this track played out by Donato at Labyrinth 2008, and immediately loved it. It has a great hypnotic groove. I still play it out today. Peter Van Hoesen: Quartz #1 (T2X11) This is probably the most brutal track I have ever released on Time To Express. It's not as known as 'Terminal' (which is on the same release) but I still like to go back to it when the time is right. Dario Zenker: Insirer (T2X12) This is the first release by Dario on Time To Express. There's a joyfulness present in this tune which immediately got my attention. I had great fun remixing this track, taking it out of its 4/4 style into breakbeat territory. SP-X: Extract (T2X13) Super solid, rough techno without compromise, with enough funk to keep any dancefloor going. Check also SP-X's Voltage EP which we released in 2011. Peter Van Hoesen & Donato Dozzy: Dock (T2X15) One of the many tracks that came out of a week long recording session at Donato's studio in Italy. It's all about the swirling, psychedelic sound effects. Convextion: Oil on Metal (T2X17) This track is part of the Labyrinth EP. I could have chosen any of the four tracks on this doublepack since I love them all. However, I played this track during this year's Labyrinth, and its impact stunned me. This is one of the most emotive pieces of techno released on Time To Express. Sendai: Emptiness of Attention (T2X20) Taken from the Geotope album. Yves and I made this track in practically one take, with some editing afterwards. We play an interpretation of this track in our live set, and I noticed that this is always the moment when the room becomes very quiet and attentive - it's these mesmerising chords that do it, I think. Peter Van Hoesen: Inspection in Solitude (T2X22) This one's from my latest album, Perceiver. Our graphic and motion designer Yko made a stunning video for it, which is the main reason why I am including it in this list. When I first saw this I felt very privileged. Seeing his images team up with my sounds was a very special moment.
